ITEM SUMMARY:
· This Ordinance will establish a school zone along Jordan Road for Imagine Charter School.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
· Imagine Charter School is located north of the intersection of Jordan Road and Virginia Parkway.
· Imagine Charter School has two drop-off and pick-up times. One for the lower school, grades K-5, and one for the upper school, grades 6-9. There has been some discussion that Imagine Charter School may consolidate the two periods into one drop-off and pick-up time.
· Staff has monitored the traffic operations at the school during the first two weeks of operation and feels that a school zone is necessary along Jordan Road where pedestrian activity occurs adjacent to the queue of vehicles entering the school.
· The school zone will reduce the speed of vehicles travelling adjacent to the vehicles waiting to enter the school property as well as reduce driver distraction resulting from the use of cell phones.
· The effective times for the school zones are established as follows:
o Morning school zones begin 30 minutes before the beginning of the lower school attendance period and end 15 minutes after arrival time of the upper school.
o Afternoon school zones begin 25 minutes before the end of the lower school attendance period and end 30 minutes after dismissal time of the upper school.
· The school attendance periods have been established by the school and these periods are different than MISD's, resulting in school zone hours that are different than adjacent school zones.
· The location of the proposed school zone for Imagine Charter School is shown on the attached exhibit.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
· Funds for this item are available in the operating budget of the Public Works Department.
