· Acceptance of the 2014 Award to the Mayor and City Council
ITEM SUMMARY:
· The year of 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Communities across the country celebrated National Community Development Week on April 21-26 to recognize the importance of CDBG and other programs predominately benefiting low-to-moderate income persons. National Community Development Week provides the opportunity to educate members of Congress and local citizens on how Community Development Programs and activities help create jobs, revitalize neighborhoods, provide public services, workforce housing, and improve lives for the benefit of our entire community.
· The National Community Development Association (NCDA) annually recognizes communities through the John A. Sasso National Community Development Award. The City of McKinney was one of 19 recipients nationally to receive the 2014 award, presented at the NCDA's annual conference.
· The City of McKinney used their CD week as an outreach platform to bring together partners, media, subrecipients, program beneficiaries and the public to celebrate, recognize and inform others about the impact of the CDBG program. The Honorable Sam Johnson, State of Texas (3rd District) opened the activities for the week, which included the Mayor's proclamation ceremony, agency and homeowner partnership tours, fair housing public education workshops, a neighborhood revitalization activity, and the city's annual community shred event.
· The theme was "40th years of Building Strong Communities." Partners of National Community Development Week included the U.S. Conference of Mayors; National Association of Counties; National League of Cities; National Association of County Community and Economic Development; National Association of Finance Agencies; Habitat for Humanity International; Rebuilding Together; American Planning Association; Council of State Community Development Agencies; National Association of Development Organizations; Local Initiatives Support Corporation; National Urban League; U.S. Department of Housing and Community Development (HUD); National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials; Feeding America; YWCA USA; International Economic Development Council and National Urban Housing Coalition.
· The City of McKinney thanks all its partners, volunteers and the public for their role in this recognition.
