ITEM SUMMARY:

Texas Music Office, Office of the Governor is presenting the Texas Music Friendly Designation to Visit McKinney. Presenting on behalf of the Office of the Governor will be Director Brendon Anthony and Community Relations & Outreach Specialist Chip Adams of the Texas Music Office.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Texas Music Office is the State of Texas' official economic development office for the Texas music industry, and the office's resources are an unparalleled source of information into why the Texas Music industry annually has a multi-billion-dollar economic impact on the state's economy. The music industry has been growing in McKinney for years, so it made sense that the city be officially recognized by the Office of the Governor with their Texas Music Friendly Community designation. Visit McKinney began the process of earning this designation for the city late last year and in January, hosted a workshop to connect local people involved in the music scene with Visit McKinney and the Texas Music Office. At that point, a seven-person advisory board was appointed for McKinney's Music Office with Visit McKinney serving as the group's liaison with the Governor's Office. This advisory board will begin holding meetings once this designation is officially in place.]

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

The Texas Music Friendly Designation has the potential to attract musicians from outside of the area to come perform in the City of McKinney, attracting their own fans and therefore bring visitors that stay overnight, shop and dine in McKinney.

While not an official board project, members of the group, including McKinney musical artist Maylee Thomas-Fuller and her husband McKinney Mayor George Fuller, partnered with others in McKinney’s music industry recently to establish a McKinney Musician Relief Fund. This was done to help musicians who make their living performing and who have not been able to perform live since the shutdown of restaurants and other venues due to COVID-19. Also, as part of the process of working toward this designation, Visit McKinney worked in conjunction with people in the local music industry to develop a complete data base of McKinney’s musical resources. This information will now be added to the Texas Music Office Industry Directory comprised of 15,000-plus Texas music businesses used for state developments within the industry and to attract essential music industry to foster the economic development of Texas music businesses and musicians.
