Title
Consider/Discuss/Act on a Resolution Authorizing the City Manager to Purchase Library Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Conversion Equipment
Summary
MEETING DATE: March 6, 2012
DEPARTMENT: Library
CONTACT: Beth Scudder, Library Director
RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
• Authorize the City Manager to Purchase Library RFID Equipment
ITEM SUMMARY:
• Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology allows the library to track its materials as they are checked in/out and provides security so that items will alarm if they travel through security gates without being checked out
• The Library RFID equipment has reached end of life and is a challenge to maintain from an IT, staff, and vendor perspective. It’s effectiveness as a security deterrent is often compromised due to inconsistent operability
• The equipment purchased in 2006 is no longer supported by our current vendor and the technology is at the end of its useful life
• The recommended system is an upgrade in the system technology and operates with increased efficiency and the most current technology
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• In 2006, the McKinney Public Library adopted RFID technology by tagging all books in the collection and installing RFID equipment purchased from Checkpoint, Inc.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
• The price to convert the RFID equipment is $80,863 for the Hall Library and $43,960 for the John and Judy Gay Library to be paid from account 018-8701-456-9232
• The equipment is available for acquisition through TXMAS. TXMAS, available through Texas Procurement and Support Services (TPASS), supports contracts that have been developed from contracts awarded by the federal government or any other governmental entity of any state
