ITEM SUMMARY:
• The goal of the SAFER grant program is to assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities so that they may respond to emergencies whenever they occur, assuring their communities and firefighters have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
• Staff requests approval to apply for approximately $1,439,539 SAFER grant and acceptance of that amount, if awarded, to hire nine (9) additional firefighting/paramedic personnel for a minimum three-year period.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• This funding for additional firefighters will aide in providing a sufficient number of structure fire responders in order to comply with NFPA 1710.
• This grant for the hiring of new firefighters has a three-year period of performance that provides fire department with funding to pay 75% of the cost for a first year firefighter for year 1 and 2 of the grant, and 35% of the cost of a first year firefighter in year 3 of the grant.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
• The personnel cost to the City of the three-year program is $963,540.
• The City will also pay a one-time cost of $20,950 per person for equipment.
