RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:

                     Approval of this Ordinance.

ITEM SUMMARY:

This Ordinance will restrict the U-Turn movements at two existing median openings along US 380 between Airport Drive and FM 1827.

o                     One median opening is located approximately 1640 feet east of Airport Drive along US 380, which provides access to a private drive.

o                     The other median opening is located approximately 2280 feet west of FM1827 along US 380, which provides access to Greenville Street.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

These median openings between Airport Drive and FM 1827 do not have a separate left turn lane in either the westbound or the eastbound direction of US 380.

In order to maintain the traffic flow along this congested corridor of US 380, it is proposed to restrict the U-Turn movements at both median openings in both directions along US 380.

This U-Turn restriction does not deny access to Greenville Street or the private driveway as the left turn movements will continue to be permitted.

Although City Council delegated to the Traffic Engineer full and complete control over all traffic regulations within McKinney, the Texas Department of Transportation requested an Ordinance to restrict the U-Turn movements at a median opening along a State roadway not regulated by a traffic signal.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

Funds for the installation of the signs are available in the operating budget of the Engineering Department.
