Title
Consider/Discuss/Act on Authorization to Expend $2,500 from Public Art Fund to Pay One-half of Public Art Sculpture Consultant’s Fees
Summary
COUNCIL GOAL: Enhance the Quality of Life in McKinney
MEETING DATE: October 19, 2017
DEPARTMENT: Housing and Community Development
McKinney Arts Commission
CONTACT: Janay Tieken, Housing and Community Development Manager
ITEM SUMMARY:
• The Public Art Subcommittee met on the sculpture on October 9, 2017. The subcommittee agreed to retain Russell Tether and Sue Canterbury (AI#17-415) to assist with the RFQ and curation for a public art sculpture.
• Don Day offered to pay the private match of $2,500 toward the consultant fee of “not to exceed $5,000”, if the Arts Commission would authorize the other $2,500 from the public art funds.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• Russell Tether is a well-known art consultant and his partner, Sue Canterbury, is a curator at the Dallas Museum of Art.
• For arts acquisitions, having reputable consultants involved in the RFQ process lends legitimacy to the process and often results in more and higher quality submissions.
• Sculptors may offer their sculptures at a discounted rate to municipalities for the exposure that the purchase and installation will bring to the artist.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
• If approved, this will bring the total budget for the project to $25,000 ($5,000 consultant/$20,000 sculpture).
