RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
* Approve the final draft of the Solid Waste Management Strategy
ITEM SUMMARY:
* The Solid Waste Management Strategy (SWMS) provides recommendations for potential goals, objectives, and alternative options to meet the City's most critical sold waste and recycling needs over a 20-year horizon.
* The SWMS serves as a strategic tool that is flexible and open to adaption based on the City's changing needs and objectives.
* The SWMS forms the basis for developing the City's next solid waste collection services contract, which is expected to begin on October 1, 2024.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
* Burns & McDonnell started the Solid Waste Management Strategy (SWMS) study on December 15, 2020, and a draft version was presented to the City Council on June 28, 2022.
* The consultant sought input from multiple stakeholders including residents and civic organizations, business owners, City staff, and NTMWD and member cities.
* The SWMS identifies and analyzes a broad range of key topics, processes, as well as recommends strategies and options for high-priority sectors (i.e., Solid Waste Trends, Policies, and Regulatory; City Ordinance, Regulations, and Codes; CBD/ Downtown; Environmental Outreach, Engagement, and Public Education; Single-Family and Multi-Family Residential; Commercial/Industrial; Regional Facilities, Infrastructure and Disposal Capacity; Citywide Strategies; etc.)
