RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
·      Based on a review of the national debate on water fluoridation, staff recommends approval of a request to NTMWD to maintain an average of 0.7 mg per liter of fluoride in our water supply.

ITEM SUMMARY:
·      Information is provided as attachments from various organizations and individuals.
·      Adding fluoride to community water supply is a standard practice followed by most municipalities across our country.
·      There would be a small cost savings to the NTMWD budget if the practice of fluoridation was eliminated.
·      NTMWD would need request letters from its Member Cities before requesting the NTMWD Board of Directors consider any action to cease fluoridation.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
·      Fluoride is a natural occurring element in our raw water and would not be totally eliminated by NTMWD curtailing their current practice of adding fluoride to the drinking water.
·      Fluoridation began in 1981 at the request of the Member Cities and with approval of the NTMWD Board of Directors
·      US Department of Health and Human Services recommends a level of 0.7 mg per liter of water
