RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:                      

                     Approval of Resolution for application and acceptance of the grant, if awarded

 

ITEM SUMMARY: 

                     The application seeks one hundred percent (100%) funding for entry-level salaries and benefits for six (6) police officers

                     There is no local match requirement; however, additional funds will be required to purchase uniforms and needed equipment

                     The six (6) police officers will serve in the capacity of Bike Officers for residential and business areas, etc. and to address specific quality of life issues in the city

                     The grant is for a period of three (3) years. At the conclusion of three (3) years of grant funding, the City must retain all CHP positions for a minimum of one year

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: 

                     The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) is a competitive grant program that provides funding directly to law enforcement agencies to create jobs and increase community policing and crime prevention efforts

 

FINANCIAL SUMMARY: 

                     The grant request is for $417,228, which provides entry-level salaries and benefits for six (6) police officers

                     The police department will be requesting the funds needed for uniforms and equipment for the six (6) officers in the FY12 budget in the amount of approximately $117,363
