RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
* Selection of names for the following:
o Two Streets
o The McKinney National Airport Airfield
o The Courtroom Theater in the MPAC Building
o Event Rooms at the Gateway Events Center
* Approval of the ordinance.
ITEM SUMMARY:
* At the request of the City, TxDOT has abandoned the right-of-way of FM 543 to the City.
* A new street connecting Highway 75 with the old FM 543 is under construction. This street will eventually be extended to tie into Custer Drive at its intersection with Frontier Parkway.
* New names are needed for both streets.
* Council has also discussed the need to provide names for the McKinney National Airport Airfield, the Courtroom Theater at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, and the event rooms at the Gateway Events Center.
* Council discussed the issue on May 5, 2014 and staff was instructed to prepare a list of possible names.
* The Parks Department maintains a list of potential names for City Parks and Facilities and Council will put forth some suggestions.
* Based on Parks' list and Council's suggestions, a list of possible names is attached. Also attached are the available biographies of the names on the list.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
* The current exit sign on Highway 75 says "FM 543, Weston Road."
* The event rooms at the Gateway Events Center consist of:
o A ballroom dividable into five subrooms
o A boardroom
o Five meeting rooms
