ITEM SUMMARY:

This Resolution authorizes the City Manager to apply for, accept, reject, alter or terminate the UASI Program grant award, through the Office of the Governor, to fund purchase of an Armored Vehicle to respond to hazardous situations.

The UASI program focus is to support state and local efforts to prevent terrorism and other catastrophic events and to prepare the nation for the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk to our security.

The Armored Vehicle will allow for the protection of police officers when responding to hazardous situations/incidents.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Current police vehicles and existing armored vehicles do not have the capability to stop larger rounds of ammunition, especially rounds fired from assault type weapons.

The proposed vehicle will provide a safe and secure platform for police officers to approach a hazardous location and will provide armored cover and concealment while police respond to critical calls.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

The amount of the grant is $208,000.

The total estimated amount of the armored vehicle is $318,023. The remaining funds will be taken from account number 011-3125-426-9204.

Ongoing maintenance and operation costs to be absorbed through existing Police Department Operating Budget.
