Presentation of American Planning Association Award

summary

On April 3, 2017 the City of McKinney Historic Downtown/Neighborhood was awarded the Great Neighborhood award as part of the inaugural Great Places in Texas Program.

The Great Places Program recognizes “great” places in Texas based on design, functionality, sustainability, character, quality, and community participation.

The criterion for selection includes evidence of nominee's significant contributions that support the creation of a safe, beautiful, and sustainable environment which includes contributions toward the goals of the architectural profession for improvement of the built and natural environment in Texas.  The Award also recognizes the capital improvements that have enhanced the urban design, physical function, and economic viability of the downtown and the community.

To earn this recognition, the city must illustrate a variety of visually appealing design and architectural features; accommodate multi-modal transportation for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers; offer a variety of activities and facilities to support everyday life such as green spaces, parks, businesses and more; and demonstrate how the local history is retained and interpreted.

The Great Neighborhood Award is the result of visionary and cooperative efforts among the citizens, building owners, city staff, and elected officials that have helped to maintain McKinney’s hometown feel.
