RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
* Approve the proposed resolution.
ITEM SUMMARY:
* Staff is seeking the City Council's approval of a resolution which would formally adopt a set of principles guiding the City's efforts to implement the 5G wireless technology.
* At the April 22, 2019 City Council work session, staff made a presentation regarding 5G wireless technology including what it is, how it works, and why the City would benefit from the implementation of 5G wireless infrastructure. This presentation is attached hereto for reference purposes.
* During this presentation in April, staff described an anticipated path forward which included the following general steps:
o Adopt 5G Guiding Principles (May 2019)
o Launch 5G Strategy Initiative including the issuance of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and the procurement of a consultant's services which would include project scoping (Spring 2019)
o Development 5G Strategy including the creation of a holistic regulatory framework and the planning for targeted infrastructure installation the for Sam Rayburn Tollway Corridor (Summer 2019 and beyond)
* The approval of the proposed resolution and corresponding adoption of the proposed guiding priciples would complete the first step in our efforts to implement the 5G wireless technology.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
