RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
• Approval of this Ordinance.
ITEM SUMMARY:
• This Ordinance will rename Country Lane as Airport Drive from Wattley Way to Old Mill Road.
• This Ordinance will also remove inconsistencies in the use of the names Airport Road and Airport Drive on the several plats for properties along the roadway between University Drive (US 380) and Wattley Way.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Country Lane
• Country Lane currently begins at the intersection of Airport Drive and Wattley Way, and extends south to Old Mill Road.
• The McKinney City Council convened a committee for street naming in October, 2018. The committee provided direction to proceed with the renaming of Country Lane as Airport Drive.
Airport Road / Airport Drive
• The southbound lanes of roadway from University Drive (U.S. 380) to Industrial Boulevard were constructed in 2003 and were platted under the name Airport Road. The northbound lanes of the roadway between University Drive (U.S. 380) and Industrial Boulevard were constructed in 2008 and platted under the name Airport Drive.
• The portion of the roadway from Industrial Boulevard to Wattley Way was constructed in 2004 and platted as Airport Road.
• The parcels along the entire length of the roadway are all currently addressed as Airport Drive, regardless of the name that is shown on the respective plat.
• All street name signage along the corridor and the City of McKinney geographic information systems (GIS) currently reflect the name of Airport Drive, regardless of the name that is on the plat.
• For consistency and elimination of any potential confusion, Staff recommends the formal renaming of the portions of roadway currently recorded as Airport Road to Airport Drive. Doing so will result in a continuous roadway name along the corridor, extending between University Drive (US 380) and Old Mill Road.
• The owners of the twelve (12) parcels with addresses on Country Lane or Airport Drive as well as those of four (4) adjacent parcels not addressed to the affected roadways have been informed of the pending changes.
• It is noted that the breakpoint in the City’s addressing system for north and south roadways exists along Greenville Road. Roadways north of Greenville Road are designated with N. as a prefix, and roadways south of Greenville Road are designated with an S. prefix. For the purposes of this item, the prefixes are not included in the roadway names.
• City Staff will install all street name signage and will make all necessary changes to the Comprehensive Plan and to the City of McKinney geographic information systems (GIS), reflecting the names of N. Airport Drive and S. Airport Drive. Staff will additionally inform the United States Postal Service and Collin County Central Appraisal District of the change.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
• Funds to install and/or modify existing street name signage are available in the operating budget of the Engineering Department.

• The City Council Sub-committee has directed the renaming of Country Lane as Airport Drive.
