ITEM SUMMARY:

                     At the June 4th work session, April Morman, the Court Administrator, discussed the benefits of McKinney Municipal Court becoming a Court of Record.   Key reasons that the City of McKinney should pursue becoming a Court of Record include, but are not limited to, the following:

                     To reduce the number of cases being appealed;

                     To increase jurisdiction;

                     To reduce the administrative burden on court staff;

                     To recapture revenue on appealed cases; and

                     To provide a more efficient disposition of cases.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

                     With the potential passing of an ordinance approving Court of Record status in McKinney, the City will have all the necessary requirements met to become a Court of Record.   10 of 12 of our comparable/benchmark communities are Courts of Record.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

                     Over the course of the past five (5) years, there have been 992 cases appealed to Collin County.   Those cases have totaled $291,453.57 in lost revenue to the City.
