ITEM SUMMARY:

McKinney Community Development Corporation will conduct a public hearing on a project grant application submitted by Hugs Café Inc. for the purchase and installation of electrical infrastructure and equipment for Hugs Greenhouse.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

MCDC has allocated $1,563,985 to fund community projects eligible for consideration under sections 501 to 505 of the Texas Local Government Code in FY 20.

The mission of Hugs Café Inc. is to enhance the lives of adults with special needs through training and employment.

Hugs’ goal is to provide a place of competitively-paid training and employment for adults with special needs - that teach valuable skills and provide an ability-conscious career pathway.

Hugs Greenhouse recognizes food service may not be for every person or every ability and has created a business enterprise that trains and educates adults with special needs on gardening, retail sales and provides a revenue stream for the organization.

The Greenhouse project proposal is for the investment of heating and final propagation infrastructure for two greenhouses.

Hugs self-financed and began construction of the greenhouses which were completed in 2019. Funding of this application will allow the project to be completely finished.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

The request is eligible for MCDC consideration under Section 505.152 of the Texas Local Government Code - Projects Related to Recreational or Community Facilities.

The project will support development of a business enterprise for Hugs Café and training opportunities for the community served by Hugs.
