COUNCIL GOAL: Enhance the Quality of Life in McKinney

MEETING DATE: September 10, 2020

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation

CONTACT: Michael Kowski, Director of Parks and Recreation

RECOMMENDED PROS BOARD ACTION:
* Recommend to the City Council a Name for a new pavilion within Finch Park.

ITEM SUMMARY:
* Naming of a park or features within a park is typically coordinated with the project's construction, which is currently underway at Finch Park.

* The Alcantara family has approached the City with a request to name a park feature in memory of Jill Alcantara, and Staff has identified as a strong option the new pavilion located next to the McKinney Garden Club's landscape area within the park.

* Alcantara played an active role in the beautification of our community, to include a leadership position in the McKinney Garden Club, advocating for the thoughtful preservation of greenspace, and supporting the parks system in various capacities, as well as other endeavors that drew upon her professional landscape design experience and civic-minded nature.

* Should this recommendation be moved forward and approved by City Council, Staff would commence with developing the appropriate signage and related narrative materials in anticipation of a formal dedication event.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
* The City's naming policy requires that the Board provides a name or names to the City Council for consideration, in accordance with the guidelines set forth by City Council.

* Generally, a name(s) should be selected based on the following: Outstanding and/or predominant geographical or physical features of the land; Outstanding and/or predominant historical features of significance; Contributions of land for a park site; or in honor of a community/state leader or hero.
