ITEM SUMMARY:
• Several catalyst projects are scheduled for East McKinney including a new Municipal Community Complex, renovations to Old Settlers Recreation Center, and relocation of Tupps Brewery.
• The City of McKinney is the current owner of the Collin County Mill and Elevator Company located at 407 East Louisiana Street.
• A proposal has been received for a major public art installation by Australian artist Guido Van Helten.
• Van Helten works with the community to honor cultural and heritage contributions for theme.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• Van Helten is acclaimed internationally with works that span the globe.
• Van Helten has a series of painted silos across the United States as part of his ‘Monuments’ project.
• In 2018, the Historic Downtown McKinney Cultural District was designated by the Texas Commission on the Arts. The silos are located in the Cultural District.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
• The proposal is $298,850 and some items on the proposal may be acquired through in-kind donations, such as lodging and equipment.
• A potential Cultural District grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts would help cover up to 50% of the project’s cost.
• Private and foundation support is also being sought for this project.
• Potential support from the McKinney Arts Commission could be considered.
