5B: Create affordable recreational and cultural arts activities for all ages throughout the city.

ITEM SUMMARY: 

                     The McKinney Community Development Corporation will consider a request for approval to lease an approximately 11,000 square foot parcel of land, owned by McKinney Community Development Corporation, and located at 704 Greenville Road for the purpose of creating a Learning Garden to benefit residents of McKinney.

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: 

                     The parcel of land is adjacent to the TUPPS Brewery Campus.

                     Community needs that have been identified that would benefit from a Learning Garden include:

o                     Access to high quality food/produce

o                     Education regarding healthy eating

o                     Identification of resources and materials to plant a home garden.

o                     Need for greater awareness of community resources fighting hunger, local farms, volunteer opportunities, local businesses and events.

                     Creation of the Learning Garden will provide a venue to provide important educational information to support home gardens and grow and harvest vegetables for home consumption.

                     Community support includes:

o                     Local gardeners, plant societies, master gardeners, agency leaders, restauranteurs

o                     HUGS Café

o                     La Tiendita

o                     TUPPS Brewery

 

                     Initial build would be funded through McKinney Parks and Recreation, Texas Health Resources and local businesses and donors.

                     Garden development and ongoing management will be led by McKinney Parks Foundation

 

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

                     No funding request from MCDC at this time.
