ITEM SUMMARY:

Proclamation designates October 6th, 2025, as Mayors’ Monarch Pledge Day in the City of McKinney.

This action affirms the City’s commitment to pollinator conservation and acknowledges McKinney’s role along the monarch butterfly’s migratory pathway.

The Proclamation encourages residents to participate in monarch and pollinator habitat restoration through planting native milkweed, reducing pesticide use, and supporting community conservation efforts.

The City of McKinney continues to enhance pollinator-friendly spaces at locations such as the McKinney Performing Arts Center, Green Gardens of McKinney, and East McKinney Learning Garden.

By adopting the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, McKinney joins cities across the country in a unified effort to restore monarch populations.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The monarch butterfly population has declined by over 90% in the past two decades.

McKinney lies directly within the monarch’s migratory flight path and has taken proactive steps to create and preserve pollinator habitats.

This Proclamation demonstrates leadership and reinforces the City’s ongoing sustainability and environmental stewardship initiatives.

Through this symbolic yet impactful action, McKinney strengthens community engagement and raises awareness of conservation efforts.
