RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:

Provide direction regarding the development and implementation of a citywide Sustainability Roadmap

ITEM SUMMARY:

Review and discuss the proposed citywide Sustainability Roadmap

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

As McKinney continues to grow, proactive long-term planning is essential to ensure City services are delivered efficiently while preserving existing infrastructure and minimizing avoidable future costs.

Effective management of solid waste and recycling, water resources, stormwater infrastructure, and air quality-related factors helps reduce operational expenses, extend the lifespan of City assets, and limit the need for costly reactive maintenance.

The Sustainability Roadmap provides a practical, data-driven framework to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and support informed decision-making across City operations.

The Roadmap prioritizes strategies that support public health, protect property and infrastructure, and safeguard the natural resources relied upon by residents and businesses.

City Council has previously identified sustainability as a priority and directed the Public Works Department to develop a roadmap that reflects community values, fiscal responsibility, and City Council-approved goals.

The Sustainability Roadmap translates City Council direction into measurable objectives and performance-based strategies across the following focus areas:

o                     Materials Management (solid waste and recycling)

o                     Water Conservation

o                     Stormwater Management

o                     Air Quality
