RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
• Approve the Resolution for the Artist Rendering and Authorize the City Manager to execute the Artist Contract.
ITEM SUMMARY:
• In 2013 City Council approved Resolution 2013-11-170 adopting the Amended Public Art Guidelines, which outlines the process for selecting and approving Public Art Projects and the use of City Public Art Funds.
• The Public Art Guidelines require all projects have a 50% match of external funds.
• The professional services contract with Susan Norris is attached.
• McKinney resident, Elizabeth Riddle, is providing a private match of $10,000 toward the project. A Pledge Agreement for the donation is attached.
• The Benji sculpture will be installed on the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Tennessee Street and Virginia Street.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• The Artist and Design for sculpture was selected by a Public Art Selection Subcommittee of the McKinney Arts Commission.
• The Benji sculpture is based on the canine character from the 1974 movie, ‘Benji,’ with many scenes filmed in downtown McKinney and in the historic neighborhood.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
• The estimated total cost for the Benji sculpture, base and installation is $20,000.
• The artist was paid a $250 rendering fee. The artist contract is for $15,000 with $5,000 remaining for creation of the base and installation.
BOARD OR COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:
• The McKinney Arts Commission recommends awarding the Benji sculpture artist contract to Susan Norris.
