ITEM SUMMARY:
• The Google Inc. WAZE mobile application provides real-time traffic data to motorists through a map-based user interface. The data shown on the map is collected by WAZE through a number of methods including WAZE user input, real-time location and speed data collected from mobile devices, and through governmental and agency partners via the Connected Citizen’s Program.
• This item will allow the City Manager to execute an agreement with Google Inc. to enroll the City of McKinney in the WAZE Connected Citizens Program. This program serves as a two-way data sharing platform through which the City can broadcast pertinent transportation-related data to users of the WAZE service. In return, the City will receive a real-time data stream including traffic- and roadway condition-related data from the WAZE service.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• Staff gave an informational presentation regarding the Connected Citizen’s Program at the February 19 work session.
• The WAZE CCP currently has over 450 partners including cities, states, and National Governmental entities. Locally, the cities of Frisco, Plano, Garland, Arlington, Fort Worth, and others are members of this program.
• There is no cost to the City to participate in this program.
