ITEM SUMMARY:

The Texas Veterans Commission’s Fund for Veterans’ Assistance is a state-funded grant program that provides funding ($31,000,000 available) for a variety of services that support veterans. One category of eligible services is transportation services.

If awarded, the grant funds would be used to help cover a share of operating costs for Collin County Transit’s ride service that can be attributed to veteran riders.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Housing & Community Development Department, in coordination with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), manages federal and state grant funds to administer the Collin County Transit’s on-demand ride share service for low-income, senior, and disabled individuals.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

No match is required. The exact amount of funding that will be requested is still being determined. Staff are currently surveying Collin County Transit riders to determine the number of Collin County transit users that are veterans.

BOARD OR COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:

The McKinney Urban Transit District Board supports efforts to continue providing transit services. Increasing the portion of the local match that is funded through grants fully aligns with this objective.
