ITEM SUMMARY:
• The International Code Council (ICC), which is the governing body over our model building codes, celebrates Building Safety Month every May to bring global attention to building safety and to recognize the code professionals who work to make sure construction is safe.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• The ICC encourages local and state governments to issue proclamations in observance of Building Safety Month.
• McKinney has historically proclaimed and celebrated Building Safety Month every May.
• The theme for 2026 is “Built to Last” and the weekly topics are as follows:
o Week 1 (May 1-10) - Safe Homes, Strong Communities
§ Focuses on simple actions homeowners can take to improve safety at home
o Week 2 (May 11-17) - Voices of the Built Environment
§ Spotlights building safety professionals and the roles they play in keeping communities safe
o Week 3 (May 18-24) - Prepared to Protect
§ Encourages community preparedness and highlights how disaster-resilient building codes protect people and property
o Week 4 (May 25-31) - Communities Without Limits
§ Showcases the importance of accessibility in building design
