RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
• Approve recommended amendment to Code of Ordinances
ITEM SUMMARY:
• The amendment to the Code of Ordinances will prohibit sexual offenders from residing within 2,000 feet of public parks, public playgrounds, public or private schools, libraries, public swimming pools, public or private youth centers, and child day care centers, if the person is required to register on the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Sex Offender Database.
• A person who violates any of these provisions shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction, shall be fined a maximum of $2,000 for each separate offense.
• The registration and location of the residence of each sexual offender will be monitored by the Information & Intelligence Unit of the McKinney Police Department.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
• At this time, paroled sexual offenders and sexual offenders on probation that reside in McKinney follow only the minimum standards as required by the Courts, of registering with the police department and residing a minimum of 500 feet to 1,000 feet from a child free zone, as determined by their individual parole or probation requirements.
• Frisco, Plano and Richardson have ordinances with similar requirements.
