BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The City’s mosquito control program was established in 2004 in response to the emergence of West Nile Virus on the East Coast. Since then, the program has grown into a proactive, modern public-health initiative.  Today it operates under an integrate pest management framework that emphasizes three core components: continuous mosquito surveillance, community education, and targeted use of chemical controls when necessary.  This approach allows the City to reduce mosquito populations effectively while prioritizing prevention, data-driven decision-making, and responsible use of treatments.
