BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

McKinney Roots is a food donation garden located on a 5-acre lot in McKinney.

The mission is to supply fresh produce to the food insecure by growing and distributing it to local nonprofits, schools and churches to alleviate hunger with healthful, nutrient-dense food.

McKinney Roots was founded in 2017 to address the issues of increasing poverty, hunger and food insecurity in Collin County.

Crop production currently takes place on one of the five acres - there is room to expand the operation.

McKinney Roots has partnered with Salvation Army, Community Lifeline Center, McKinney Little Free Pantry and other organizations to distribute 8,750 pounds of honey and fresh produce.

In addition to produce, McKinney Roots added egg production to the operation in 2021.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

MCDC has allocated $1,530,105 for the discretionary project grant program in FY21.

The request is eligible for MCDC consideration under Section 501.101 of the Texas Local Government Code.
