ITEM SUMMARY:

In 2013 City Council approved Resolution 2013-11-170 adopting the Amended Public Art Guidelines, which outlines the process for selecting and approving Public Art Projects and the use of City Public Art Funds.

The Public Art Guidelines require all projects have a 50% match of external funds.

The professional services contract with Susan Norris is attached.

McKinney resident, Elizabeth Riddle, is providing a private match of $10,000 toward the project. A Pledge Agreement for the donation is attached.

The Benji sculpture will be installed on the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Tennessee Street and Virginia Street.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Artist and Design for sculpture was selected by a Public Art Selection Subcommittee of the McKinney Arts Commission.

The Benji sculpture is based on the canine character from the 1974 movie, ‘Benji,’ with many scenes filmed in downtown McKinney and in the historic neighborhood.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

The estimated total cost for the Benji sculpture, base and installation is $20,000.

The artist was paid a $250 rendering fee. The artist contract is for $15,000 with $5,000 remaining for creation of the base and installation.

BOARD OR COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:

The McKinney Arts Commission recommends awarding the Benji sculpture artist contract to Susan Norris.
