ITEM SUMMARY:

This aquatics facility is located at 1101 E. Louisiana Street, adjacent to the Old Settler’s Recreation Center, and opened to the public in 2003.

Staff received a formal request from the public to consider renaming the Old Settler’s Aquatic Center in honor of Gilda Garcia Garza. Ms. Garza served for three terms as McKinney’s District 1 council representative beginning in 2001.

Among many other community projects, Ms. Garza was instrumental in delivering the aquatics facility during her tenure.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Ms. Garza passed away in 2019, and City Council proclaimed May 16, 2019, as Councilwoman Gilda Garcia Garza Day in the City of McKinney.

The packet of supporting materials provided to Staff includes letters from business leaders, city dignitaries, close friends, and her son-in-law, who first proposed the idea in 2019.

The City’s naming policy requires that the Parks Board vet and provide a name or names to the City Council for consideration, in accordance with the guidelines set forth by City Council.

Generally, a name(s) should be selected based on the following: Outstanding and/or predominant geographical or physical features of the land; Outstanding and/or predominant historical features of significance; Contributions of land for a park site; or in honor of a community/state leader or hero.

BOARD OR COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:

On April 21, 2022, the PROS Advisory Board unanimously approved to recommend to City Council that this facility be renamed the Gilda Garcia Garza Aquatic Center.
