BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

McKinney Roots is a food donation garden located on a 5-acre lot in McKinney.

McKinney Roots added egg production to the operation in 2021.

The mission is to supply fresh produce to the food insecure by growing and distributing it to local nonprofits, schools and churches to alleviate hunger with healthful, nutrient-dense food.

McKinney Roots was founded in 2017 to address the issues of increasing poverty, hunger and food insecurity in Collin County.

Crop production currently takes place on one of the five acres - there is room to expand the operation.

McKinney Roots has partnered with Salvation Army, Community Lifeline Center, McKinney Little Free Pantry and other organizations to distribute 12,000 pounds of honey and fresh produce.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

Funds allocated for MCDC discretionary Project Grants for FY23 totaled $2,177,223.

In FY 2021, MCDC awarded $15,000.00 to McKinney Roots for the construction of a hydroponic greenhouse.

The request is eligible for MCDC consideration under Section 505.151 of the Texas Local Government Code.
