ITEM SUMMARY:
* McKinney Community Development Corporation will conduct a public hearing on a project grant application submitted by McKinney Roots for the construction of a chicken coop in an amount of $22,000.
* This new chicken coop will allow McKinney Roots to triple its egg production.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
* McKinney Roots is a food donation garden located on a 5-acre lot in McKinney.
* McKinney Roots added egg production to the operation in 2021.
* The mission is to supply fresh produce to the food insecure by growing and distributing it to local nonprofits, schools and churches to alleviate hunger with healthful, nutrient-dense food.
* McKinney Roots was founded in 2017 to address the issues of increasing poverty, hunger and food insecurity in Collin County.
* Crop production currently takes place on one of the five acres - there is room to expand the operation.
* McKinney Roots has partnered with Salvation Army, Community Lifeline Center, McKinney Little Free Pantry and other organizations to distribute 12,000 pounds of honey and fresh produce.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:
* Funds allocated for MCDC discretionary Project Grants for FY23 totaled $2,177,223.
* In FY 2021, MCDC awarded $15,000.00 to McKinney Roots for the construction of a hydroponic greenhouse.
